This 1937 Delahaye Type 135 Coupe des Alpes Cabriolet was first registered in July 1937 to M. Cyriel Depery, a young industrialist and part of the French Resistance during World War II. Reportedly the second in a series of 7 cabriolet roadsters by Henri Chapron on the 135-chassis, this is likely to be the only surviving example.
The Delahaye was sold to Eugene Julliard in 1951 and used regularly until his death in 1960. After being stored by a mechanic in Annecy, Georges Lombard discovered the car and finalized his purchase of it in January of 1961. He lovingly used this Type 135 often and carried out mechanical and cosmetic work to it where needed. He also drove it in early classic car rallies such as the Bugatti Club Holland Rally in 1965 and the Tour du Lac d'Annecy in 1969. The car belonged to Lombard until 2013, when it was subsequently acquired by John Shirley who reportedly spent $1,400,000 restoring the car for Pebble Beach. Carried out over the course of two years, the comprehensively documented restoration by Dennison International shows exceptional finish quality and attention to detail. This Delahaye Type 135 debuted at the 2016 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance wearing a world-class restoration that honors its legacy.
Numerous historic photos and detailed documentation of its early life in France are included with the car, along with multiple binders of restoration and service records. A letter from January 2014, signed by Noelle-Elenore Chapron certifies that this Delahaye (Chassis 47545) was bodied by Henri Chapron on May 4th, 1937, and was the second car of a series of 7 produced by the coachbuilder. More recently, this Delahaye has participated in several driving tours and was a First in Class winner at Audrain Newport Concours in 2024.
